TROY, N.Y. – Fifth-year senior
Hudson Livesey had four hits and six runs batted in to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Vassar College, on Saturday afternoon at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark. With wins of 13-1 and 7-4, the Engineers improve to 12-13 overall (4-7 Liberty League), while the Brewers drop to 11-18 (3-10 Liberty League).
Junior Martin Marinchev opened the scoring for the hosts with an RBI-triple off the fence in right, before Livesey singled him home for a 2-0 advantage.
The next inning,
Joey Saia plated RPI's third run with a fielder's choice groundout, before the Engineers loaded the bases for Livesey, who launched a grand slam to left, putting the Engineers up 7-0. The long ball was Livesey's fourth of the season.
Saia singled home a run in the bottom of the fourth, before Marinchev made it 9-0 with an RBI-groundout later in the frame.
Ty Murray, who went 2 for 3 for the Brewers in the game, drove in Vassar's lone run with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring lead-off man Reid Lapekas.
The Engineers answered with a single run in the bottom half of the frame, before plating three insurance runs in the eighth on just two hits.
Graduate student
Chris Grome (4-1) picked up the victory on the hill, allowing one run on three hits over 7.0 innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Sam Brinster (1-2) took the loss for the Brewers, surrendering nine runs (4 earned) on seven hits over 4.0 innings of work.
The nightcap saw both teams trade runs early in the contest. A bases-loaded walk got the Brewers on the board in the top of the first, before RPI answered with a four-run bottom half. Graduate student
Joe Curci delivered the big blow in the inning, driving in two with a double into the right field corner that scored Livesey and Marinchev.
After the Brewers scored a second inning run to draw within 4-2, RPI came right back with a three-run bottom half, getting two in a single through the right side off the bat of
Jack Moncur.
Four scoreless frames followed until Vassar was able to scratch across two in the top of the seventh. Freshman
Cameron Heuer was able to get out of the inning and seal the win by getting a 1-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and fly out.
Ryan Yerby (2-3) went 4.0 innings to pick up the victory in the seven-inning affair, giving up two runs on three hits. He struck out nine and walked five. Cole Eggleston (1-3) allowed seven runs (4 earned) on four hits over 1.1 innings, before giving way to Ty Langford, who worked the final 4.2 innings.
