Women's Lacrosse Edges Skidmore, 11-10

Megan Shay lead early Engineers attack, before Thoroughbreds comeback falls just short

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior Megan Shay notched a game-high five points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Skidmore College, on Tuesday night at Wachenheim Field. With the win – their sixth in a row – the Engineers improve to 9-2 overall (5-1 Liberty League), while the Thoroughbreds drop to 2-9 (2-5 Liberty League).

Shay netted the first two goals of the game to give the visitors a 2-0 lead before four minutes were gone in the opening quarter. The Thoroughbeds stormed back, getting consecutive goals from Gabriella Modesti, Maeve McKinley and Danielle Kilburn to take a 3-2 lead.

Rensselaer answered, however, as they went on a 4-0 scoring run of their own to open up a 6-3 edge with 12:23 left in the second quarter. Freshman Lauren DeLeo registered two of her three goals in the game during the stretch.

Skidmore pulled to within a goal (6-5) with 10:38 left in the half, thanks to tallies from Elizabeth Walsh and Maddy Marr.

Junior Rylie Maready and DeLeo closed out the half by scoring for the Engineers, to give RPI an 8-5 lead at the break.

Shay began the second half by sticking home her 35th and 36th goals of the year to give the Engineers a 10-5 – their largest of the game, with 12:19 remaining in the third.

McKinley and Maready then traded goals, leaving RPI up 11-6 with 8:30 on the clock in the third quarter.

Skidmore then held the Engineers scoreless for the remainder, while netting four goals of their own. The Thoroughbreds cut the deficit just one with 1:22 to play, but could not sneak an equalizing tally past RPI goalie Jenny Canfield.

Both Olivia Kimball and Canfield, who split the game between the pipes, finished with eight saves, while Skidmore's Liv Kazanjian had six stops.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit St. Lawrence (12pm). Skidmore hosts St. John Fisher on Friday (6:30pm).
