TROY, N.Y. –
Alexis Cooke threw a no-hitter and
Brooke Sroczinski hit a home run and had a win in the circle to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Cobleskill, on Saturday afternoon at Doris Robison Field. With wins of 8-0 and 15-1, the Engineers improve to 10-10 on the year, while the Tigers drop to 2-8.
In Game 1, Cooke (3-5) surrendered only two walks, while striking out five over 5.0 innings to record RPI's first no-hitter since April 24, 2021, when she combined with
Logan O'Neill and Sroczinski to blank SUNY New Paltz, 3-0.
RPI wasted little time breaking out the bats, scoring two in the first on an RBI-groundout from
Erin Askins and a double to center from
Gabby Comeau. Jess Torch then got the scoring starter again in the second, singling home Sroczinski, before Askins tripled in
Madie Campagna for a 5-0 lead.
Sroczinski ripped a solo homer to straight away center in the third for a 6-0 advantage. She then lifted a sacrifice fly to start a two-run fifth. The game ended two batters later on a Tiger miscue in the field that allowed pinch-runner
Lenies Andeliz from third.
Game 2 saw the Engineers once again jump out to an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first.
Liv Vizzini plated the first run with a groundout, before
Caroline Peel drew a bases-loaded walk.
Cobleskill got one run back in the top of the second, when Jillian Nitchman crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
The Engineers answered with two in the bottom of the second, before blowing the game open with a five-run bottom of the third. Comeau and Vizzini came through with run-scoring base hits during the outburst, giving the hosts a 9-1 lead.
A six-run fourth for RPI helped bring the contest to a premature ending. Askins highlighted the frame with a two-run double.
Sroczinski (2-1) allowed just one unearned run on one hit over 5.0 innings, striking out seven and walking two.
RPI is back in action on Wednesday, when it hosts Utica College for a pair (3:30pm). Cobleskill hosts Union College on Tuesday (3pm).
