GENEVA, N.Y. – Maddie Montgomery recorded seven points to lead the ninth-ranked William Smith women's lacrosse team to a 15-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday afternoon at Urick Stadium. With the win, the Herons improve to 13-1 overall (8-0 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 9-4 (5-3 Liberty League).
William Smith scored the first seven goals of the game over the opening 23 minutes of action. Montgomery had two goals an assist during the run, while Katherine Murray netted a pair of goals.
RPI junior
Megan Shay ended the run with her team-leading 37th goal of the season, with 5:48 remaining in the first half.
The Herons then scored all six tallies in the third quarter to open up a 13-1 advantage. Montgomery collected three of those markers, while Anna Murphy potted two in a row late in the third.
Freshman
Claire Shemo stuck home her 10th of the season to pull RPI to within 14-2 with 1:22 left in the game, before Murray capped the scoring with her 30th of the year in the final minute.
Maura Smeader made seven saves to earn the win for the Herons, while
Olivia Kimball (10 saves) and Juliana Lucas (2) combined for 12 stops for the Engineers.
Rensselaer is back in action tomorrow afternoon at the University of Rochester (2pm), while William Smith hosts Union College tomorrow (3pm).
