SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team pounded out 26 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of Union College, on Saturday afternoon at Alexander Field. With wins of 11-2 and 8-0, the Engineers improve to 20-14 overall (7-3 Liberty League), while the Dutchwomen drop to 16-10 (2-8 Liberty League).
In Game 1, the Engineers broke open a scoreless game with a four-run top of the third.
Erin Askins drove in two with a single, before coming home on a wild pitch. Later in the frame,
Chloe Lewandowski doubled in
Caroline Peel for a 4-0 advantage.
After adding a single run in the fourth, RPI scored six times in the sixth to go up 11-0. The frame was highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of junior
Catherine Worthington. Askins,
Gabby Comeau and
Alex Ledger all added RBI-singles in the frame.
Union got on the board in bottom half of the sixth, when Faith Hughes doubled down the line in left, scoring a two.
Senior righthander
Erika Holowka (9-4) allowed two runs on six hits over 6.0 innings to pick up the win in the circle. She struck out five and walked five. Amanda Granato (8-5) took the loss for Union, surrendering four runs on eight hits in 3.0 innings.
In Game 2, RPI scored two in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to earn the doubleheader sweep in an 8-0 victory.
Senior
Ryleigh Greenwald drove in the first run of the game with a bunt, before Askins doubled to left plating Worthington.
RPI's two runs in the fifth came on a Worthington home run and an RBI-single off the bat of Comeau. One inning later,
Megan Wampner came across on a wild pitch, before
Jessica Torch lifted a sacrifice fly to left that was dropped, but Greenwald scored on the play anyway.
Ledger then capped the scoring in the seventh with a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Comeau and Askins.
Junior
Alexis Cooke (7-7) went the distance for RPI, giving up just three hits over 7.0 innings. She struck out four and walked one. Granato (8-6) once again was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings.
The Engineers have now reached the 20-win plateau in every full since season

RPI is back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon, when it travels to Ithaca for a doubleheader (1pm). The Dutchwomen host Skidmore for a pair tomorrow afternoon (1pm).
