ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -
Martin Marintchev and
Hudson Livesey both had three hits and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team scored six runs in the fourth inning on its way to defeating Bard College 12-10 in a Liberty League game on Sunday afternoon. The teams combined for 25 hits with the Engineers knocking out 14 of them.
Trailing 3-1 after the third inning, RPI scored six times on six hits in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. After
Joe Curci led off with a single, Martinchev followed with a double to put two runners on with no outs. Livesey, a senior catcher, tripled to right field on a 3-2 pitch to tie the game at 3-3.
Ayush Krishnappa singled with one out to score Livesey before coming around himself after a wild pitch and a single by
George Rainer. A Jtriple to right center by
Jack Moncur, the ninth batter of the frame, plated two for a four-run lead.
The Engineers held an 8-6 lead heading into the ninth inning and then tacked on four more runs for a 12-6 advantage. Curci started that rally with a walk, followed by a single by Marintchev and an RBI single from Livesey. Marintchev scored on a Krishnappa sacrifice fly and Livesey came home on a sac fly by Rainer.
Dylan Albert came across for the 12th run.
The last four runs proved vital as the Raptors got four in their half before freshman
Cameron Heuer struck out the last batter with runners on second and third. It was his second save of the season.
Ben Koomey, who pitched three innings of relief, earned the win to improve to 2-0.
Marintchev added two runs and Livesey had two runs and three runs batted in. Curci and Albert both scored twice and Krishnappa had two hits, a run and three RBI.
Joey Saia had two hits and a run scored.
Jared Toby, Bard's catcher, was 4 for 4 with two runs and four runs batted in. Starter Aiden Risse took the loss after going six innings for the Raptors, who were the beneficiaries of five errors by the Engineers.
