Baseball Evens Record With 13-3 Victory

TROY, N.Y. - Senior catcher Freddy Reichelt had three hits, two runs and an RBI, three others collected multiple hits and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team scored in six different innings to defeat SUNY Cobleskill 13-3 in a non-league game at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon. The victory is the third in the last four games for the Engineers, who improve to 10-10. The Fighting Tigers drop to 7-11.

RPI jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning on an RBI double by Joe Curci, a single by Hudson Livesey and an error. Cobleskill pulled to within 3-2 with single runs in the second and third frames, but the Engineers tallied three in the fourth and four in the fifth for a 10-2 advantage. Each of the runs in the fourth came with two outs and after an error so were unearned.

The fifth inning saw the first three batter reach, including an RBI single by Cole Paquin, before a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. A Joey Saia single plated one and a double by Jake Defayette brought home Reichelt and Saia. Reichelt doubled home Paquin the next inning for an 11-2 lead before both teams scored in the seventh. Reichelt came across with the final run in the eighth inning after he led off the inning with a single.

Livesey finished with two hits, a run and an RBI; Paquin was 2 for 5 with two runs and a run batted in; and Saia was 2 for 2 with three runs and an RBI. Defayette, the leadoff hitter, had a hit, two walks, two runs and two RBI.

Rensselaer used six different pitchers with starter Rylan Wade giving up a run on two hits in 2.0 innings. Michael Castello and Jack Ellis both added 2.0 innings with Ellis getting credited for the win after allowing no runs and just one hit.

Aidan Maxell, the starter for Cobleskill, took the loss after allowing six runs (2 earned) on three hits with three walks in 4.0 innings. He struck out three. The Fighting Tigers managed six hits on the day with first baseman Samuel Gutierrez collecting two of them. He also scored a run and knocked in another.

RPI returns to Liberty League action this weekend when it travels to Skidmore College for a doubleheader on Saturday. Cobleskill is schedule to play at Utica College on Wednesday.
