Engineers win opener, 11-3, before falling, 2-1

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – Junior Joey Saia hit two home runs, including a grand slam to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to an 11-3 victory over Union College, on Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. The Engineers, who dropped the nightcap, 2-1, are now 13-16 overall (5-10 Liberty League), while the Dutchmen move to 14-15 (8-9 Liberty League).

The Dutchmen trimmed the visitors' lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the seventh, getting a run on a homer off the bat of Sebastian Pike. The next inning, they made it 9-3, thanks to an RBI-single from Colby Nash and a sac fly from Justin Cabanas.

Saia extended the RPI lead to 11-3 in the top of the ninth, roping his second home run of the game and fourth of the season over the fence in left. The two-run shot also plated Rainer, who had reached for the third time in the game.
