TROY, N.Y. – Brendan O'Neill hit a go-ahead, two-run home run to lift the Skidmore College baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the opener of a three-game Liberty League series, on Saturday afternoon at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 16-2-1 overall (5-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 10-11 (2-5 Liberty League).
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the eighth, Max Mello doubled ahead of O'Neill, who hit the first pitch he saw from RPI graduate student left-hander
Chris Grome over the right field fence, giving the visitors a 3-2 advantage that they did not relinquish.
The Engineers did get a pair of runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Christian Giresi was able to snag a hard hit grounder that was headed back through the box and throw out RPI first baseman
Joe Curci to end the game.
RPI broke up a scoreless contest in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice.
Hudson Livesey doubled home Martin Marinchev to get the Engineers on the board, before Livesey came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior shortstop
George Rainer.
Skidmore didn't plate its first run until the top of the seventh, when Jackson Hornung ripped a ball into the hole that deflected into the center off the glove of a diving
Ayush Krishnappa. Jaden Torrado scored on the play and the Thoroughbreds were set up to do more damage with two in scoring position, but Grome was able to induce a fly out to right to end the threat.
The visitors saw Jack Clarks (5-0) allow two runs on five hits over 7.0 innings, to pick up the victory on the hill. He stuck out three and walked four. Giresi earned his second save of the season, surrendering two hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
Grome (3-1) was the tough luck loser for the Engineers, giving up three runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings of work. He struck out eight and walked three. Freshman
Cameron Heuer tossed 1.2 perfect innings of relief, striking out three without issue a free pass.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they play a doubleheader at Skidmore College's Castle Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 12pm.
