ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Loren Castilloux collected two hits and two runs batted in to led the University of Rochester softball team to a 6-4 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday morning at Southside Field. With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 25-13 overall and advance to Saturday's championship game. The Engineers fall to 24-16 and await the winner of the Ithaca/Skidmore elimination game this afternoon (3pm).
RPI scored the game's first run in the top of the first, when senior
Jessica Torch reached on an infield single and advance to second on a wild pitch. She then moved to third on a bunt from junior
Catherine Worthington and came across to score on a sacrifice fly from classmate
Erin Askins.
The Yellowjackets put together a five-run third to take the lead. Molly Mason tied the game with a solo home run to left. A sac fly from Bailey Nicholoff gave the hosts their first lead of the game, before Hannah Keiper launched a two-run shot right down the left field line to make it 4-1. A single to through the left side by Loren Castilloux capped the rally for the Yellowjackets.
After a scoreless fourth, Rochester added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-double from Castilloux for a 6-1 advantage.
The Engineers rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to pull to within 6-4. Torch dropped down a bunt single in front of walks to Worthington and Askins. Junior
Gabby Comeau then ripped a double down the left field line to plate a pair and chase Rochester starter Lauren Keys from the game. Two more singles followed from RPI, but a pair of runners were thrown out at third base to quell the comeback effort.
Holowka kept the Yellowjackets off the board in the bottom half, but the Engineers went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
Keys (11-6) went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. She struck out one and walked two.
Alexis Cooke (8-8) took the loss for RPI, giving up five runs (1 earned) on four hits over 3.0 innings. She struck out three and walked one. Holowka surrendered a single run on four hits in 3.0 innings of relief.
Comeau sixth inning double was her 16th of the year, which ties Melissa Fratine '01 for the program's single-season record.
