ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Matt Cappelletti hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break up a no-hitter and send the University of Rochester baseball team past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Game 2 of a Liberty League Crossover Series at Towers Field. The Yellowjackets, who won Game 1, 12-0, improve to 29-9 overall (16-3 Liberty League) and advance to the conference tournament, while the Engineers conclude their season at 14-18 (6-12 Liberty League).
Cappellitti drilled a 1-1 pitch from RPI graduate student
Ryan Yerby over the fence in left for the game's only run with one out in the sixth inning. Yerby (2-4) had allowed only two walks to that point, while striking out six.
RPI got a runner aboard in the top of the seventh on a walk drawn by
Ayush Krishnappa, but could not plate the tying run, as Rochester reliever Thomas Karpishin (3-1) finished off the final 2.0 innings to pick up the victory.
The Engineers had a chance to take the lead in the top of the sixth, when freshman
Aidan Hicks singled up the middle and stole second with one away. After a strikeout,
Jake Defayette ripped a base hit to right, but Hicks was thrown out at the plate, keeping the game scoreless.
In Game 1, Luke Pionek went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and two walks to lead the Yellowjackets to a 12-0 victory.
Rochester scored three in the second on just one hit – a double by Josh Leadem. Quicy Jaksch was credited with driving the first run of the contest by drawing a bases-loaded walk, before Aaron Whitley was hit by a pitch to make it 2-0. Brian McKinsey was also beaned to cap the rally for the hosts.
The Yellowjackets tacked on two more in the fourth and another in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage. Luke Piontek came through with an RBI-triple in the fourth inning. Harper Sy singled home the first run in a two-run sixth, before coming home himself on a wild pitch.
Piontek then ignited a four-run eighth with a double to the gap in right center that scored Sy.
Krishnappa led RPI offensively in the contest, going 3 for 4, while
George Rainer,
Joey Saia,
Hudson Livesey and
Jack Moncur also collected base hits.
Nolan Sparks (6-1) earned the win in the opener, allowing five hits over 5.0 innings. He struck out nine and walked two. Jason Cobert earned the 4.0-inning save, giving up on two hits and striking out for.
Chris Grome (5-2) took the loss for RPI, allowing six runs on four hits over 4.0 innings. He struck out five and walked four.
Rochester awaits the results of the other Liberty League Crossover Series to determine the location of next week's double-elimination tournament.
