Drover-Mattinen is National Rookie of the Year

TROY, N.Y. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced it's 2022 Division III Men's and Women's National Awards and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Aiden Drover-Mattinen has earned the Men's Rookie of the Year. He is believed to be the first national year-end rookie honoree in school history.

A freshman, Drover-Mattinen (Portugal Cove - St. Philips, NL Blyth Academy) played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Engineers, posting a combined record of 47-11.

He was 28-3 in 31 singles matches with a 17-0 record in dual match play. Two of his losses came to teammates in tournament action, while the third was in the second round of the NCAA Singles Tournament, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, to Stan Morris of Middlebury College. It was the first loss in three matches against Morris, who went on to win the NCAA championship and be named the ITA National Player of the Year.

The 2021-22 campaign included an 18-match winning streak for Drover-Mattinen, a Dean's Honor List computer science major. He had 25 straight-set victories and went on to be ranked No. 9 in the final ITA singles listing, also believed to be a school record.

In doubles, he was 19-8 overall as part of three different duos. His primary partner was senior Peter Lohrbach (Little Neck, NY / North Port), with whom he was selected to play in the NCAA Championship and finished with a No. 10 national ranking. They were 15-4 overall and 6-1 in Liberty League action.

They had an eight-match winning streak heading into the NCAA Tournament, including victories in the Liberty League semifinals and final.

In addition to the ITA National Rookie of the Year Award, Drover-Mattinen also garnered ITA National All-America, Northeast Regional ITA Rookie of the Year, Liberty League Player of the Year, All-Liberty League Singles First Team and All-Liberty League Doubles First Team. He was the Liberty League Singles Performer of the Week five times, on the Doubles Team of the Week three times, all with Lohrbach, and the Rookie of the Week five times.

He was ranked No. 3 in singles in the Northeast Region and No. 3 in doubles.

As a team, Rensselaer, which is coached by Jon Satkowski, finished at No. 7 in the region and No. 22 nationally, according to the final ITA Ranking - the highest in program history. The Engineers were 16-3 overall, tying the school mark for wins in a season, and Liberty League Tournament champions. Also the conference regular season champions (8-0), they advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.
