MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Carly Amerman tallied the first two-goal game of her career to lead the Montclair State University field hockey team past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 3-0 on Sunday. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Engineers, who are now 4-3. The Red Hawks have now won three in a row themselves and improve to 3-4.
Montclair's Linsey Champa had the first two opportunities of the game for as her reverse chip shots were just off the mark. She later assisted on the first goal at the 2:05 mark of the opening frame, feeding Carlie Van Tassel down low for the opening marker. The team nearly broke through for a second tally early in the second, but Champa was stopped by goalkeeper
Jen Richardson, and Van Tassel hit the post.
Off a penalty corner in the third quarter, Gab Maisto inserted and found Amerman at the top of the circle. Amerman fired a shot that went in for her second goal of the season. Montclair State continued to apply pressure, but a defensive save by
Kendra Patterson kept the score 2-0. Ten seconds later, Maisto inserted another corner, and off a scrum, rookie Kelly Westervelt poked the ball to Amerman, who netted her second of the day. The Red Hawks clamped down on defense and surrendered just two shots on goal the remainder of the game to earn the 3-0 triumph.
Lauren Pickul denied three chances by RPI in the contest, while Richardson finished with four saves.
