PITTSFORD, N.Y. -
Delana Bonci scored twice and
Jen Richardson made four saves as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team defeated St. John Fisher 3-0 in a non-conference road match. The Engineers move a game over .500 (5-4), while the Cardinals drop to 1-6.
Bonci, a senior, gave RPI an early lead when she got her stick on a drive from classmate
Brianna Duba and deflected the ball into the cage just 2:23 into the contest. The tally started with a penalty corner, which was initiated by
Kaitlyn Stulen. Nineteen minutes later, Stulen set up Bonci to make it 2-0 in the second quarter and
Lauren McCarthy scored unassisted only 42 seconds into the second half.
Richardson, a senior, made two saves in the first quarter and two in the fourth with
Mikayla Berman picking up a defensive save.
The Engineers held substantial advantages in both shots (19-7) and corners (18-9). They forced St. John Fisher goalie Sophia Trozzi to make nine saves, including six in the first quarter.
RPI returns to Liberty League action on Saturday when it faces Union College in Schenectady on Saturday at 6pm. The Cardinals play at Empire 8 foe Nazareth College on Wednesday at 7pm.
