Emma McGuinn had a second and a third and
Jillian Lees had a runner-up as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's track & field team returned to action at the multi-divisional Utica University Winter Opener at the Hutton Sports & Recreation Center. The competition was Rensselaer's first since December 10.
Running in the 60 meter hurdles, McGuinn won her preliminary heat (9.53) to advance to final, where she was the runner-up. Her time of 9.38 was second only to Ejim Nnate of Oneonta State, who crossed in 9.28. McGuinn, a first year student, later ran second on the 4x200 relay team that had a third place finish (1:52.68). Also on that squad was
Christine Mallette,
Katie Manning, and
Caitlin Smith.
Lees, a senior, ran second in the 800 meters with only Siena College's Keira Flaherty beating her. Flaherty clocked a 2:24.50 with Lees less than a second behind at 2:24.75.
RPI also had a top three finish in the 5000 meters with
Ashley Williams doing so in a time of 19:56.00. She trailed teammates from SUNY Brockport.
As a team, the Engineers had 43 points to finish seventh in the 15-school event. Felician University was first with 108 points, followed by Brockport (100), and SUNY Cortland (92).
