Men’s Hockey Edged Out at Maine

Engineers Late Push Falls Short in Orono

ORONO, ME – Senior Jake Gagnon scored twice – including one late in the third period – as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey program was edged out by the Maine Black Bears by a final score of 6-3 on road Friday night. With the loss, RPI falls to 0-2-0 on the season, while Maine improves to 2-0-0.
 
The Black Bears jumped on the board first, scoring on the power play at the 6:15 mark courtesy of Josh Nadeau. Harrison Scott added to the Maine lead at the 10:23 mark with a goal, pushing the Black Bears lead to 2-0. Lynden Breen and Reid Pabich each assisted on the goals, while Thomas Freel assisted on both tallies.
 
Before the first period was over, RPI got on the board and cut the lead in half as Gagnon added his first goal of the night courtesy of Sutter Muzzatti and Lauri Sertti. The score stoof 2-1 after the opening frame.
 
In the second, Maine opened up their lead as Nadeau scored once more at the 6:58 mark – once again on the power play. Grayson Arnott scored the second goal of the period, putting it in with 19 seconds remaining. Freel added his third assist of the night on the goal from Nadeau along with Brandon Holt, while Scott and Bradly Nadeau each assisted on Maine's fourth goal.
 
RPI continued to fight back as Lucas Matta scored his first goal in an RPI uniform in unassisted fashion just 14 seconds into the third period to make it 4-2 in favor of Maine. Maine then scored again at the 10:05 mark from Donovan Villeneuve-Houle on assists from Ben Poisson and David Breazeale to push the Maine lead back to three.
 
Gagnon scored his second of the night with 17:58 to play on an assist from Ryan Brushett to give RPI life late in the third period. However, Maine put in an empty netter from Poisson on an assist from Villeneuve-Houle to seal the deal for the Black Bears.
 
Carson Cherepak made 45 saves on the night in net for the Engineers, while Victor Ostman made 16 saves in net for the Black Bears
.
RPI returns to action next Friday, October 20 at 7 p.m. when they head east to take on Boston College in Chestnut Hill.
