TROY, N.Y. – Junior quarterback
Jake Kazanowsky threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns while
Christian Buckley ran for 122 yards on the ground as she Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football team defeated the Buffalo State Bengals by a final score of 51-28 at ECAV Stadium Saturday afternoon. With the win, RPI improves to 5-1 overall and 1-1 on the season, while Buffalo State moves to 1-5 and 0-3 in Liberty League play.
After RPI and Buffalo State traded interceptions on their opening drives, Kazanowsky found
Hayden Faraday in the end zone for a five-yard touchdown pass to cap a 47 yard drive to go up 7-0. After forcing a punt on Buffalo State's ensuing possession,
Sterling Walker-Sutton ran back the punt return 89 yards for a touchdown as RPI quickly ran up a 14-0 score.
Buffalo State got on the board with 59 seconds on the clock in the second quarter, as Noah Kimble found Nicholas Bruce for a 19-yard touchdown pass to cap a 54 second drive to bring the Bengals back within a score at 14-7. However, the Engineers needed just 30 seconds as Kazanowsky found
Gil Goldsmith up the right sideline behind the defense as he took home a 55-yard touchdown pass to make it 20-7 RPI just before halftime after the extra point rang off the post.
In the third quarter, RPI extended out their lead as Buckley scored the first rushing touchdown of the afternoon before Buffalo State blocked a punt on the next RPI possessions and scooped it for a score to make it 27-14.
Jared Elstein collected a 29-yard field goal toward the end of the third quarter to make it 30-17.
The fourth quarter saw a flurry of scores, as both sides traded scored the whole 15 minutes of play - including three different touchdowns late in the fourth in just a 73 second span. A rushing touchdown by
Dameon Ming capped the scoring for RPI, pushing them over the half-century mark to make it 51-28 final.
Defensively,
Cortez Garrett had a big game with right tackles, while
Anthony D'Agostino added seven tackles - including on for a five-yard loss.
Diego Fernandez and
Desmond Von Tobel also added six tackles apiece. Garrett,
Carlos Davis, and
Cassius Johnson each walked away with an interception - marking the most in a game for the Engineers this season. Kenneth Mosley and Evan Cervantes led the way for the BEngals with 11 total tackles apiece.
RPI returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. when they head north to Canton to take on St. Lawrence.
