Field Hockey Edged Out on Senior Day by Union

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey program celebrated their Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Harkness Field, honoring three of their student athletes - Maura Kiernan, Dani Samuelson, and Sarah Nace. On the field, the Engineers battled behind a pair of goals from junior Lauren McCarthy, but fell short by a final score of 4-2.

Union opened the scoring in the first quarter when Rachel Ostiguy tallied an unassisted goal to put the Garnet Chargers ahead early.

RPI then battled back to even the score early in the second quarter, as McCarthy scored her first of the day right in front of the net, collecting a ball that deflected off the stick of Nina Caprio to tie the game at 1-1.

The Garnet Chargers then put up three unanswered goals through the third quarter, as Maddie Greco, Megan Dorsey, and Grace Krebs each found the back of the net. Dorsey also earned an assist on Krebs' goal, giving Union a 4-1 lead as the game moved to the fourth quarter.

McCarthy scored her second goal of the game just over four minutes into the final frame, cutting the Union lead to 4-2. The goal came off a Caprio deflection once again, with McCarthy finishing on the back post of the net.

RPI finished with four shots on the afternoon, while the Garnet Chargers supplied 10 shots. Engineers goaltender Tess Garchinsky finished strong making six saves, while Union's Sophie Brady made two stops.

The Engineers return to action next Saturday, Oct. 28 at 12 p.m. when they take on non-league opponent Oneonta on the road for their regular season finale.
