TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Associate Vice President & Director of Athletics Dr. Kristie Bowers has announced the hiring of Maguire Sweeney an assistant men's basketball coach. He will aide 10th-year head coach Mark Gilbride.
A native of Summit, N.J., Sweeney joins the Engineers following one year as an assistant coach at Rutgers University-Newark, where he was the program's recruiting coordinator, scouting director, and academic coordinator. In addition, he was involved in player skill development, film breakdown, operations, graphic design for recruiting, and social media content.
During his tenure with the Scarlet Raiders, Levin Holton, a sophomore guard, was named NJAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, while another was a two-time conference Rookie of the Week, and three student-athletes earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team honors.
Prior to Rutgers-Newark, Sweeney was a member of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team from 2017-22. In his five seasons, he helped the Ducks to conference championships in 2020 and 2022. A captain of the 2022 squad, he appeared in 77 college games following a standout scholastic career at Union Catholic High School.
Sweeney earned a bachelor's degree in business management in 2021 and an MBA in project management in 2022, both from Stevens.
He also has experience with the Hoop Group as a recruiting coordinator, aiding thousands of high school students attend various elite level basketball camps.
