Women’s Hockey Battles to Shootout Win at Bemidji State

Engineers Last-Minute First Period Goal Sets Tone

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team began their road slate strong, pulling out a 1-1 tie with a 1-0 win in a shootout over the Bemidji State Beavers Friday night. RPI moves to 2-0-3 on the season to remain unbeaten, while Bemidji State goes to 0-2-1 overall.

The Beavers were the first to get on the scoreboard in the first period, as Hailey Armstrong scored short-handed at the 10:44 mark. Assisting on the play were Raeley Carney and Makenna Deering.

As the first period wound down, RPI managed to find the back of the net with just under 10 seconds to play. A tip in front of the net from Nyah Philip on a shot from Asiah Taylor-Walters slipped past Bemidji State goaltender Abbie Thompson to tie things at 1-1 going into the second period. Michelle Nutescu also earned an assist on the play.

Both sides played even through the remaining 40 minutes, forcing overtime. Neither side converted in the five minute period, forcing a shootout. After multiple tries from both teams, Bailey was able to find the back of the net to put RPI up 1-0. With Tayla Hendrickson up for the Beavers, she was stopped by Amanda Rampado – who made 34 saves on the night – to secure the win for RPI.

The Engineers return to action tomorrow on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. (3 p.m. EST) for the second matchup of the weekend at Bemidji State.
