TROY, N.Y. – A pair of goals courtesy of
Gwen Barnes and
Izzy O'Clair lifted the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Skidmore College Throughbreds at ECAV Stadium on Saturday. Senior
Megan Wampner came up with the clean sheet in net for the Engineers.
O'Clair opened up the scoring just minutes into the game, as she ran onto a ball that deflected off a Skidmore defender. O'Clair then dribbled into the 18 yard box, and connected with the twine in the right sdie of the net to give RPI the 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. From that point, the Engineers continued to push and play good defense, knocking away multiple bouncing and dangerous balls in the defensive end. Goalkeeper Megan Wamper had herself a solid first half, making two key saves to keep the Engineers ahead.
As the second half rolled in and got underway, it didn't take long for RPI to collect their second goal of the evening. Barnes was the receipient of a great tic-tac-toe passing exposition that came off the foot of Veronica de Pinillos to Barnes wide open in the 18 as she scored to make it 2-0 RPI in the 53rd minute.
From there, Wampner and the RPI defense buckled down and kept Skidmore off the board for the duration to grab the win. Wamper made eight saves, while Skidmore's Claire Wolgast made nine.
RPI returns to action on Friday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. as they head to Geneva to take on William Smith College in Liberty League action.
