OSWEGO, N.Y. - Graduate student
Jonny Angbazo scored a new career-high 31 points as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team defeated Keuka College by a final score of 89-70 in their season-opening game at the Oswego Tip-Off Tournament.
Angbazo shot a stout 12-for-16 from the floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 from long range. He added a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and also grabbed 10 rebounds to make his first double-double of the season.
The Engineers put their foot on the gas early, opening up a 257 point lead just past the midway point of the first half after a jumper from
Avery Eugster gave RPI a 37-10 lead with 8:07 to play in the opening frame. However, Keuka only allowed the Engineers seven points over those final eight minutes, as they cut the lead back to single-digits by the half after Mason Van de Mortel hit a three-pointer with six seconds remaining in the half to cut the lead to nine.
Keuka continued to push into the start of the second half, getting as close as four points at the 15:28 mark after a Christian Sage layup. However, an 10-0 run by Angbazo himself pushed the RPI lead back to 14 over a five-minute span. That allowed the Engineers to play loose down the stretch, ultimately shutting down Keuka through the final whistle for the double-digit win.
Dylan Matchett added an 18 point performance, while
Avery Eugster chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds. As a team, the Engineers shot 12-for-15 from the free throw line. For Keuka, Sage finished with 25 points while Devin Milton added 20 point and a team-high four steals.
RPI return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they take on the host Oswego Lakers in the championship game of the Oswego Tip-Off Tournament.
