TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team turned in a 3-3 tie against the Northeastern Huskies on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House, as Northeastern came out with a 1-0 result after a shootout. The tie marks RPI's first even result of the season and moves to 2-6-1, while the Huskies move to 2-7-1 on the season.
RPI jumped ahead early in the first period, as
Austin Heidemann found himself wide open in front of the net on the left post. A bouncing puck thrown from the board by
Dovar Tinling found Heidemann, who smacked it home in the upper left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 5:18 mark.
Northeastern evened things up late in the first period, as Jack Williams stole the puck just outside of the Huskies offensive zone, and skated all the way in and beat
Carson Cherepak's glove. The unassisted goal tied the game up at 1-1 at the 14:03 mark of the opening period.
Like the first period, the Engineers scored early in the second period to go up 2-1. Sophomore
Danny Ciccarello scored in his fourth straight game, getting a puck up the middle of the ice from
Ryan Brushett behind the defense, scoring on the break away to give RPI the lead. Freshman
Brad McNeil also assisted on the play.
Williams once again spoiled an RPI lead, scoring at the 11:02 mark to tie the game at 2-all before Northeastern took the lead at the 15:45 mark with a power play goal from Pito Walton that gave the Huskies their first lead of the evening, 3-2. Vinny Borgesi and Cam Lund assisted on the tying goal, while Gunnarwolfe Fontaine and Justin Hryckowian earned assisted on the man-up tally.
Things stayed in favor of the Huskies into third period before
Jake Gagnon scored on the power play to pull things back even at 3-3. A shot from the top of the left wing circle found the back of the net for Gagnon, with
Max Smolinski and Tinling earning assists.
Things remained 3-3 through the end of regulation and the overtime period, pushing things to a shootout. With the tie already secured, the Huskies scored on their fourth shooter - Justin Hryckowian – to clinch the 1-0 shootout win.
