TROY, N.Y. - The 2023 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team has three captains on the squad with
Thomas Neuman,
George Rainer, and
Joey Saia leading the way. The Engineers, under first-year head coach Jason Falcon, begin their game schedule on March 1 in Troy before a Spring Break trip to Florida later that week.
A graduate student relief pitcher, Neuman (Ft. Lauderdale, FL / Westminster Academy) is in his sixth season. He has appeared in 34 games (1 start) and has thrown 44.1 innings. He is 1-5 with a 5.89 earned run average and one save. In 12 games last year, the chemical engineering Ph.D. student was 0-2 with one save while throwing 18.1 innings in 12 games, both career-highs.
Rainer (Mount Sinai, NY / Mount Sinai), a graduate student who plays the infield, has played three seasons, starting 69 of the 70 games he has played. He has a career batting average of .274 with nine doubles, 39 runs scored, and 32 runs batted in. The management major has walked 25 times. As a senior, he hit .253 with seven doubles and 13 walks. He also scored 18 runs and drove in 14.
An outfielder, Saia (Voorheesville, NY / Clayton A. Bouton) is a senior with a lifetime batting average of .279 in 44 games. Twelve of his 38 career hits have been for extra bases, including six doubles and four home runs. He has 30 runs scored and 25 RBI. A business and management major, Saia played 29 games in 2022 when he hit .337 with six doubles and four homers while scoring 30 runs and knocking in 22. He also stole five bases on his way to being named All-Liberty League Honorable Mention.
The Engineers are coming off a season in which they went 14-18 overall and 6-12 in the Liberty League. This year's team features seven graduate students, five seniors, eight juniors, nine sophomores, and five freshmen.
