Women’s Hockey Clipped by Cornell

Wagner, Kaiser Tally Goals in Loss to Big Red

TROY, N.Y. – Forwards Marah Wagner and Ellie Kaiser each scored a goal as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team fell by a 6-2 final score to the No. 14 Cornell Big Red at the Houston Field House Friday night. RPI falls to 9-23-1 overall and 4-16-1 in ECAC Hockey, while Cornell improves to 14-12-2 and 11-9-1 in ECAC Hockey play.

Cornell opened the scoring at the 14:47 mark of the period, as the first power play opportunity for either side was converted. After an RPI penalty, Cornell took advantage of the 5-on-4 as Mackenna Van Gelder scored to make it 1-0 Big Red. After some crisp passing, Van Gelder finished a cross-ice pass to the left post from Izzy Daniel. Gillis Frechette also earned an assist on the play.

RPI evened things up in the second period when Ellie Kaiser connected for her 13th goal of the season. In a 2-on-1 rush, senior captain Marah Wagner found Kaiser cutting to the net. Kaiser then shot the puck into the upper right corner to even things up at the 11-minute mark.

The Big Red took the lead back just a few minutes later at the 14 minute mark when Gabbie Rud scored off a feed from behind the net from Kaitlin Jockims. With the puck lose in the offensive zone, Jockims found the puck, skated around the net, and passed the puck to Rud who was waiting in the slot. The goal made it 2-1 in favor of Cornell heading into the third period.

Cornell scored twice in the first two minutes of the third period to make it 4-1 Big Red. Rud scored her second of the night on a wrist shot from the top of the left circle, while Frechette scored her first on a shot from the slot on a feed from Paige Kenyon in an offensive rush.

Kaiser then paid back Wagner on the Engineers second goal of the night, as RPI converted on the power play. With Kaiser skating around the blue line, she tossed a pass to Wagner down near the right wing circle, where she sent in a shot to make it 4-2 Cornell at the 3:39 mark of the third.

The Big Red scored the fourth goal in five minutes to start the third period. Lily Delianedis tallied goal number five for Cornell, as she took a one-timer from low near the right wing circle that found the top right corner of the net to make it 5-2 Big Red. Cornell added another near the end of the third, scored by Frechette to make the game 6-2.

RPI's Amanda Rampado made 20 saves on the night, clipping her streak of games with 40-plus saves. Brynn Dulac made 24 saves for the Big Red on 26 shots on net.

The Engineers return to the ice tomorrow, Saturday, February 18 at 3 p.m. when they return home to the Houston Field House. RPI hosts No. 3 nationally-ranked Colgate for Senior Day, and the final game of the regular season.
