MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -
Emma McGuinn had three top 5 finishes and
Christine Mallette had a runner-up to highlight the women's track & field team's outdoor season opener at the J. Elmer Swanson Spring Classic hosted by Wesleyan University. The 13-school competition was non team scoring.
McGuinn, a freshman, won the 100 hurdles in 15.31, ran third in the 100 meters with a time of 13.01, and placed fifth in the 200 meters in 26.83. She captured the hurdles by .29 over the runner-up, a junior from Connecticut College, and was just over a second from first in the 100 meters. Conn senior Malissa Lindsey won the event in 12.13.
Lindsey also won the 200 meters, crossing the finish line in 25.46 with RPI sophomore
Christine Mallette earning second in a time of 26.13. McGuinn was .02 from Sophia Mack of Wesleyan for fourth (26.81).
The Engineers also had two in the top 5 in the discus with
Grace Richard placing third and
Katie Lynch in fifth. Richard, a freshman who reached 33.38 on her fifth attempt, was 1.14 meters from second (Sarah Florian of Utica) and 3.05 from first (Wenesha Steward of Eastern Connecticut St.). Lynch, also in her first year, topped out at 31.06 meters and that came on her fourth throw.
Sophomore
Grace Garman earned a fourth place finish in the javelin with a toss of 29.30 meters. Her high mark was on the fifth of her six attempts.
