SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team opened a 6-3 lead early in the game before Union went on a run as the Dutchwomen topped the Engineers 12-9 at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium. With the win, RPI drops just their second game of the season and fall to 5-2 overall and 0-2 in conference, while Union improves to 5-2 and 1-1 in league play.
RPI was strong in the first quarter, pulling out to a 5-3 lead thanks to an early two pair of goals from
Megan Shay to open the scoring. Shay then scored to begin the second quarter to complete her hat trick to give the Engineers a 6-3 lead at the 12:53 mark.
From that mark, Union ran off a 6-0 run that was capped by a goal from Sydney McPartlon at 14:13 of the third quarter. The run flipped a three goal lead for RPI into a three-goal lead for Union. The Engineers fought back with a few goals, cutting the lead back to two twice after goals from
Lauren DeLeo and Shay to make it 10-8 Union.
However, two more late goals from Union at the 3:46 and 1:47 mark left in the fourth quarter pulled the Union lead out to four goals with under two minutes to play in the game.
Rylie Maready collected a late goal at the 1:18 mark left, but the Engineers ran out of steam.
McParlton led the way for Union with four goals on the game, while Dana Truini scored three. Drew Charlton added two goals, as Anna Smith and Katie Julien finished with three points apiece as each scored a goal and dished two assists. Sydney Widlitz made 16 saves in the win.
Shay's four goals and one assist led the Engineers with five points, while Maready scored her one goal with three assists for four points. DeLeo finished with three points with two goals and an assist.
Julianna Lucas made 11 saves in the loss for RPI.
The Engineers return to action this Saturday, April 1 at 12 p.m. when RPI heads to Rochester to take on RIT in Liberty League action.
