Maready’s Late Goal Lifts Women’s Lax at RIT

Senior Tallies Go-Ahead Goal Late in Fourth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior Rylie Maready scored with 61 seconds remaining in the game as she helped lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 victory over the RIT Tigers on the road Saturday morning. With the win, RPI improves to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in league play, while RIT falls to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Liberty League play.

The Engineers came out of the gate strong, opening up a 5-2 lead that was capped by a goal from Rylie Maready with 6:17 to play in the first quarter. The three-goal lead ended up as the largest lead of the day by either side.

RIT fought back with a 3-0 run of their own, tying the game at 5-5 with 8:12 to play in the second quarter. Maready was there with an answer just a minute later to have RPI reclaim the lead before both sides jostled with goals through the final horn of the half. RIT had the last say, earning their first lead of the day with a goal at 22 seconds left in the half courtesy of Baylee West as RIT took an 8-7 lead into the locker room.

Megan Shay and Lauren DeLeo went back-to-back with tallies to open the second half, scoring just 14 seconds apart as RPI took a 9-8 advantage. The Tigers stayed with the Engineers, battling for the lead they took back with six seconds to play in the third quarter that gave them an 11-10 lead heading into the final frame.

Shay stepped with a pair of goals for the first two goals of the fourth quarter, with the tying goal coming with 14:02 on the clock, and the go-ahead goal at 9:58 remaining. RPI held the lead until 2:26 left in the game as Carrissa Hlywa scored to tie things back up at 12-12.

However, Maready found the back of the net with 1:01 remaining, as her score put the Engineer sback on top 13-12. The Tigers won the ensuing possession, and ended up with a free position opportunity with 44 seconds remaining. RPI goaltender Julianna Lucas made a clutch save to keep RIT off the scoreboard, as the Tigers turned the ball over with 17 seconds to play as RPI hung on for the win.

Shay finished the day with five points to lead the Engineers – with all five coming on goals. Maready ended with four points on three goals and an assist. Sophie Goddard also chipped in with three points on two goals and an assist. Lucas finished her day in the cage with six saves in earning the win.
