AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team found their way to win number one in the Jason Falcon era, as a six-run sixth inning highlighted the Engineers 10-9 victory over the Fontbonne University Griffins Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-1-1 on the young season.
RPI broke through first, as
Robbie Reddington knocked a single to right field to score both
Aidan Hicks and
Matt Chotiner as the Engineers took a 2-0 lead.
The lead swapped dugouts in the top of the fourth inning, as Thomas Purschke collected an RBI double to tie the game before Purschke also scored on a passed ball to give Fontbonne a 3-2 lead.
Both sides continued to swap the lead back and forth through the top of the sixth inning, as the Griffins took a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth after an RPI error scored a run for Fontbonne.
RPI batted around the order in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Reddington collected another RBI – his fourth of the game – to cap the inning. After loading the bases toward the start of the inning,
Martin Marintchev singled to left field to score two runs putting the Engineers on top, 6-5.
Joey Saia and Chotiner each knocked in RBI's with singles before Reddington reached on a fielders choice in lifting RPi to a 10-5 lead.
Fontbonne fought back with four runs in the top of the seventh inning highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Purschke to pull the Griffins back within one, 10-9. However, the combination of
Colby August and
Sam Stone kept the Griffins off the scoreboard through the final out in the top of the ninth.
Andrew Gaughan collected the win on the hill for RPI, as Marintchev and Saia each finished with two RBI's apiece to back up Reddingtons' four.
Cole Paquin and
Matt Chotiner also each collected one RBI apiece.
Purschke finished his day for the Griffins with three hits, four RBI, and two runs scored. Matt Helm and Trevor Kueper each had two hits apiece.
The Engineers return to action on Monday, March 6 at 9 a.m. when they face off with Gwynedd Mercy University for Game Three in Auburndale, Florida.
