3/6/2023 7:18:00 PM

Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team scored six runs in the sixth inning for the second straight game as the Engineers defeated the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins by a final score of 13-0 in seven innings. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-1-1 on the season.

It was all Engineers from start to finish, as RPI scored at least one run over the first four innings of play. A walk to the second batter Jack Moncur started things up. Moncur eventually scored on a sac fly from Julian Scarpa to give RPI the 1-0 lead.

The Engineers added three runs in the top of the second inning that was highlighted by a two-run home run from Parker Gelfuso to extend the lead to 4-0. Each of RPi's runs in the third and fourth innings came off defensive errors by the Griffins.

After not scoring a run in the fifth inning, RPI then exploded for a six-run sixth inning for the second straight day. The outburst of offense put together via multiple walks and RBI singles that included Gelfuso, Aidan Hicks, and Stephen Koval pushed the lead out to 12-0. The Engineers scored one more in the top of the seventh to make it a 13-0 lead before they held the Griffins off the board in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Cole Paquin reached base five times with four walks and a hit by pitch, scoring twice. Gelfuso and Hicks also scored twice on the afternoon. On the hill, Thomas Neuman threw five innings of shutout ball with eight strikeouts before giving way to Jack Ellis and Austin Walsh to close down the sixth and seventh innings.

The Engineers return to action on Tuesday, March 7 at 9 a.m. when they face off with Waynesburg University for Game Four in Auburndale, Florida.
