AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Senior
Ben Koomey started his season off on the right foot Tuesday afternoon, as he pitched six innings, giving up just one run and striking out 12 as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team defeated the Waynesburg University Hornets by a final score of 7-3 in nine innings. With the win, RPI improves to 3-1-1 with their third straight win.

George Rainer right off in the first inning to set the tone.
Waynesburg fought back in the top of the fourth inning, as Alec Engelmore knocked an RBI double to left field, scoring Bryce Bedilion to cut the RPI lead to 3-1. The run ended up as the only run given up by Koomey on the game.
A pair of RBI triples highlighted the scoring from the sixth inning on courtesy of
Ayush Krishnappa and
Joey Saia. Krishnappa knocked an RBI triple in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-1 RPI before Saia capitalized in the seventh with one himself in the bottom of the seventh to score both Moncur and
Aidan Hicks to move the Engineers lead to 6-2.
After Koomey gave way to the bullpen after a strong six innings of work, Brett Eirish pitched out of a jam in the top of the seventh before doing the same in the top of the eighth. The lefty engineered a key double play to keep the Hornets at bay with a 6-3 score heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Hicks then cushioned the RPI lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the eighth with his third hit of the day, scoring
Robbie Reddington as Eirish and
Sam Stone combined to close down the Hornets in the top of the ninth to secure RPI's third straight win in Florida.
Along with Hicks, Moncur finished with a trio of hits and an RBI. Rainer also finished with two hits, while Hicks led the Engineers with two runs scored. As a team, RPI finished the day with 13 hits. Gavin Pratt led Waynesburg with a pair of hits, the only Hornet with multiple on the score book.
The Engineers return to action on Wednesday, March 8 at 9:30 a.m. when they face off with Worcester Polytechnic Institute for their fifth and final game in Auburndale, Florida.
