ORLANDO, Fla. - After winning two doubles matches, the Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team won three of the first four singles decisions to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 6-3 in a non-league match at the USTA National Tennis Center. CMU, which is ranked No. 11 in Division III, improves to 9-3 while the Engineers fall to 5-2.
RPI's No. 2 doubles pairing of
Rani Jones and
Alex Mednikova cut its deficit to 2-1 with an 8-7 (7-3) victory and sophomore
Lorna Flores Gonzalez kept the Engineers alive (4-2) with a straight set 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Manuela Van Cotthem of Carnegie Mellon clinched the team victory with a win at No. 4 singles before the two squads split the other two matches for the final score.
The result snapped a four-game winning streak for Rensselaer and gave the Tartans their second straight victory.
