ORLANDO, Fla. - A sweep of the doubles gave the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team a commanding lead heading to singles and
Lorna Flores Gonzalez and
Alex Mednikova clinched the victory at No. 3 and No. 2, respectively, as the Engineers defeated North Carolina Wesleyan in a non-league match at the USTA Collegiate Center.
RPI jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Mednikova and
Rani Jones swept their doubles match 8-0 at No. 2. Two more wins, including one in a tiebreak by
Brooke Bauer and
Masha Karach at No. 3, led into singles.
Flores Gonzalez put the Engineers ahead 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win before Mednikova answered an NCW win with a 7-6, 6-3 victory. Rensselaer won two of the final three matches, each of which went three sets.
