SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A pair of three-point performances from
Luke Murphy and
Anthony Mazzella, and a 16 save effort from goalkeeper
Joseph Perry helped the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a 9-5 victory over the Union College Dutchmen on Saturday afternoon. With the win, RPI improves to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in league play while Union falls to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in Liberty League action.
The Engineers got the offense going early and often, scoring the first two goals of the game in the first five minutes of the first quarter.
Sean Smith and
Anthony Mazzella went back-to-back, giving RPI the 2-0 lead.
Union equalized the scored before the end of the first quarter, as Clayton Arcuri and Jake Titus each scored off assits from Archie McEvoy to tie the game at 2-2. Mazzella and Arcuri then went goal-for-goal as the score stood 3-3 at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter.
From that point on, the Engineers outscored the Dutchmen 6-2 through the final horn, which included a 4-0 run that ran through the end of the second quarter into the start of the third quarter.
Cian Hilkewich scored his first of two man-up goals at the 6:56 mark of the third quarter, scoring once again at the 10:25 mark of the fourth quarter to extend RPI's lead to 8-4.
Luke Murphy capped the game for the Engineers with a goal to make it 9-4 with 8:45 to play in the game on an assist from
Devon Boyko. Union added one last goal midway through the fourth quarter before Perry and the RPI defense held down the fort through the final whistle.
Hilkewich was one of three players for the Engineers – along with
Tyler Ruffini and
Cooper Manzi – to finish with two points apiece.
Angelo Venuto went 10-for-17 in the faceoff X, snagging seven ground balls. Boyko and
Ty Stanek each had a pair of caused turnovers to aid Perry's effort in the cage.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. when they head north to Canton to take on St. Lawrence.
