TROY, N.Y. – A goal with 3.8 seconds to play in the first overtime period sank the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to the St. Lawrence Saints by a final score of 13-12 at ECAV Stadium. RPI moves to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in league play while St. Lawrence improves to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in Liberty League action.
Quinn Wollard scored two minutes into the game, giving RPI an early lead. However, the Saints charged ahead and led 4-2 late in the first quarter. Then, a free-position goal from
Megan Shay with 2:37 to play in the opening frame started a 3-0 run by the Engineers that gave them a 5-4 lead with 11:02 left in the second quarter.
RPI outscored St. Lawrence 4-2 over the remainder of the second quarter, as the Engineers took a 9-6 lead into halftime.
Lauren DeLeo scored her second goal of the game to open the second half, as the Engineers opened up their largest lead of the game – four goals at 10-6. St. Lawrence then got a goal from Dana Fernandez at the 11:27 mark of the quarter, as the Saints brought the RPI lead back to three.
Fernandez's goal began a run for the Saints, as they scored four goals in a row to tie the game, with Liz Evans capping the run with 10:31 to play in the fourth quarter to make the score 10-all.
DeLeo and Shay went back-to-back with 6:44 and 5:26 left to play with goals for the Engineers, giving them a 12-10 lead after Shay's strike off the free position.
However, the Saints fought back, scoring with 3:36 to play as Charlotte Powell cut the lead to one. Then Fernandez tied the game with 1:03 left on the clock to make the score 12-12, sending the game to overtime after a few tries in the final minute by both sides.
The Engineers had scoring chances in the overtime period, and after a shot and save with 20 seconds to go, St. Lawrence came back the other way to their offensive end. With the clock ticking down, Bella Hillaman shot and scored with just under four seconds to play, giving them the win.
Rylie Maready finished the day with a team-high five points on two goals and three assists for the Engineers. DeLeo chipped in with four points on three goals and an assist, while Wollard added three goals as well.
Fernandez finished her day with four goals for the Saints, while Powell also scored a hat trick. Jacqui Cloutier, Liz Evans, and Hillman each scored a pair as well.
The Engineers return to action on Friday, April 21 at 4 p.m. when they return to ECAV Stadium to take on William Smith College.
