TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse had the task of facing the No. 3 William Smith College Herons on Friday afternoon at ECAV Stadium. Despite the score standing 3-3 early in the second quarter, the Engineers were defeated by the Herons by a final score of 17-7. With the loss, RPI falls to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while William Smith improves to a perfect 14-0 and 8-0 in Liberty League action.
William Smith pushed the offense early, scoring the first two goals of the game in the first 83 seconds to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Engineers pushed through the deficit and scored at the 11:44 and 10:20 marks courtesy of
Rylie Maready and
Mia Banglmaier. The score remained 2-2 through the rest of the frame until Payton McMahon scored to give the Herons a 3-2 lead with 1:55 remaining in the opening period.
Sophie Goddard knotted the game back up at 3-3 with 10:01 on the clock in the second quarter, as she tallied off a pass from Banglmaier as the Engineers looked to make a move. However, the Herons ended the first half on a 5-0 run and took an 8-3 lead into halftime.
RPI opened the second half with a pair of goals, as Banglmaier and
Megan Shay each scored, cutting the William Smith lead to 8-5 just three minutes into the half. From that point, the Herons outscored the Engineers 9-2 over the rest of the game to take the 17-7 win.
Banglmaier's three points led RPI on the stat sheet, while Maready collected a pair of goals and three draw controls. Shay added two points with a goal and an assist.
Allie McGinty led the Herons with a seven-point afternoon, scoring a hat trick and dishing out four assists. Maddie Montgomery had five points with a team-high four goals and an assist, while both Katherine Murray and Natalie Daniels each added three goals apiece.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 22 starting at 2 p.m. when they take on the University of Rochester in their final regular season home game of the year.
