POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After a quick start to the day in doubles play, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team fell by a final score of 5-4 at No. 38 Vassar College on Wednesday afternoon in league play. With the loss, RPI falls to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Vassar improves to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in Liberty League play.
RPI was strong in doubles play, scoring all three points in the match.
Nikki Ridenour and
Lorna Flores Gonzalez took the top match by an 8-6 final, while
Alex Mednikova and
Rani Jones won at No. 2 doubles by the same final score.
Masha Karach and
Brooke Bauer won the third matchup by a 7-3 final.
In singles play, the Engineers won just one matchup, with Vassar getting the five points they needed for a win. RPI got a win from
Lorna Flores Gonzalez at No. 3 singles by a 6-2, 6-1 final score. The match came down to the No. 2 singles match with things tied 4-4, where Vassar topped RPI 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) in a last set tiebreak to take the win.
The Engineers return to action next Saturday, April 22 starting at 10 a.m. when they head to Geneva to take on William Smith in league play.
