TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team extended their winning streak to nine games, as they collected their 10
th overall win of the season in a sweep of the Russell Sage College Gators by final scores of 8-1 and 8-2 at Robison Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win, RPI improves to 10-4 overall, while Sage moves to 6-8 overall on the season.
Game 1
The Engineers got things going early with a three-run bottom of the first inning.
Erin Askins and Cat Worthington each reached via a single, and both came into score on an RBI single from
Gabby Comeau as RPI took the early 2-0 lead.
Comeau also scored to make it -30 at the end of the first inning after she crossed the plate on an RBI double from
Caroline Peel.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Engineers scored a run on a Gators throwing error before freshman
Maddy Brooks tattooed a ball over the left center field fence for a three-run home run, as RPI grew their lead to 7-0.
Each side scored a run in the fourth inning, as Sage got on the board with a sacrifice fly from Katelyn Rice, while RPI made it 8-1 in the bottom of the inning as
Alex Ledger knocked an RBI double to the left center field fence.
Alexis Cooke was strong for the Engineers in the circle, pitching four innings giving up just one hit and one run.
Brooke Sroczinski and
Logan O'Neill pitched the final three innings, combining to hold the Gators off the board.
Game 2
RPI got on the board early in the bottom of the first, as
Callista Adorno sent a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Erin Askins to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
The Gators tied the game in the top of the third inning when Arianna Papas singled up the middle, scoring Emma Anderson to tie the game at 1-1.
A five-run bottom of the third for the Engineers put them ahead 6-1. An RBI single from
Alex Ledger and an RBI double from
Liv Vizzini highlighted the inning.
Erin Askins and
Gabby Comeau collected RBI's in the bottom of the sixth to push RPI's lead to 8-1. Askins singled to center field before Comeau lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Brooks. Sage tallied a run in the seventh on an Arianna Papas double before
Sydney Speanburg shut the door in the circle.
Speanburg pitched three innings of relief of winning pitcher
Erika Holowka. Holowka went foru innings, as both pitchers for the Engineers scattered four hits apiece and allowed one run apiece.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow, Monday, April 3 at 3 p.m. when RPI returns home to take on Oneonta in a non-conference double header.
