No. 33 Men's Tennis Downed 5-4 at Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. - With only one victory in singles, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team was forced to come away with at least four singles wins in its attempt to defeat Hobart College on the road but the Engineers were unable to manage more than three and lost to the Statesmen 5-4 in a Liberty League match at Bristol Field House.

Max Safanov and Bryce Burnham earned an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles for a 2-1 deficit heading into singles play. RPI got wins from Andy Zhu at No. 2, Abraham Yohannes at No. 3, and Tasmay Shah at No. 6, but could not pull out a fourth victory. Burnham dropped his match at No. 4 in three sets while the other losses came in straight sets.

RPI, which is No. 33 in the latest national rankings, falls to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Engineers conclude the regular season on Sunday at Ithaca. Hobart, which is now 14-4 and 6-1, has won six straight matches heading into Sunday's regular season finale against St. Lawrence.
