Softball Continues Run, Wins 14th Straight

Engineers Top Union in Senior Day Sweep, Continue Win Streak

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team continued their torrid run in the back half of their 2023 season, collecting their season-high 14th straight win in a doubleheader sweep of Union College by 3-0 and 10-2 final scores. RPI improve their record to 25-5 overall with an 8-0 mark in Liberty League play, while Union falls to moves to 10-14 overall and 3-5 in league play.

The Engineers have now won 24 of their last 25 games this season. Their 14 game winning streak is the longest winning streak since 2019 when the Engineers won 16 games in a row.

Game 1
Thanks to an Erin Askins single to lead off on the bottom of the first, she was able to score on a groundout from Callista Adorno to give RPI an early 1-0 lead.

The Engineers added to the lead in the third inning, with Catherine Worthington and Adorno both collecting singles – with Adorno adding her second RBI of the day. After the inning, RPI held a 3-0 lead.

RPI kept Union off the board in the game, as Alexis Cooke continued her strong season with six shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out five. Brooke Sroczinski earned her ninth save of the season pitching a scoreless seventh inning to clinch the win.

Union's Amanda Granato pitched all six innings, giving up just four hits and three runs – with only one earned run.

Game 2
Union held two early leads, as they collected a run in the second to take a 1- 0lead. After RPI tied the game on a Sydney Speanburg RBI single in the bottom of the second, Union bounced back with an RBI double from Ellie Wintringer in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.

The lead didn't last long, as the Engineers offense exploded for an eight-run inning in the bottom of the third, first tying the game on a walk from Adorno. After a ground out from Alex Ledger to move the Engineers to a 3-2 lead, Liv Vizzini sent a ball over the center field fence for a three-run home run, extending the lead to 6-2.

RPI continued to push forward with an RBI triple from Speanburg and a double from Madison Brooks to highlight the big hits after Vizzini. After the third out was made in the third inning, the RPI lead stood at 9-2.

The score stood into the bottom of the sixth, when an RBI single from Ledger scored Catherine Worthington and ended the game on a mercy rule.

Erika Holowka and Sroczinski split the game, going three innings apiece. They combined for five strikeouts, as Sroczinski pitched three scorless down the stretch.

The Engineers return to action on Wednesday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. when they return to Doris Robison Field to take on Williams College in non-conference action.
