Baseball Edged Out at Williams

Engineers Early Deficit Drops Game Against Ephs

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team fell behind early, and couldn't make up the gap as they fell to the Williams Ephs by a final score of 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon. RPI falls to 22-12-1 overall, while Williams moves to 13-15 overall this season.

Williams jumped on the board early and often, scoring five runs over the first three innings for a 5-0 lead as RPI used three different pitchers over the first three innings.

The Engineers got on the board in the fifth inning, as a sacrifie fly from Jack Moncur and an RBI single from Martin Marintchev chipped away at the lead and moved the score to 5-2. However, Williams added a run on an RPI error in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2.

RPI made a run at a comeback, scoring once in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Jake Contois to make it 6-3 in favor of Williams. The score stood until the top of the ninth, when Marintchev smashed a solo home run over the center field fence to make it 6-4. However, the Ephs finished off the game with a groundout to solidify the win.

Marintchev finished with two hits and a pair of RBI, while freshman Stephen Koval added two hits. Joey Saia added a double, with Parker Gelfuso and Phillip Li each collecting hits as well. The Engineers used seven pitchers on the day, with Alex Vallee tossing a team-high two innings of shutout baseball to highlight the staff.

Four different hitters collected four hits for Williams, with Luca Lopetrone and Jon Singleton adding an RBI apiece with their two hits. Cole Whitehouse collected a double on the day, with Lopetrone and Giove chipping in with stolen bases.

The Engineers return to action on Saturday, April 29 at 12 p.m. when they hit the road to take on Vassar in a doubleheader in Poughkeepsie.
