TROY, N.Y. - Six student-athletes had first or second place finishes for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's track & field team but it was not enough for the Engineers to overcome the University of Albany in the Capital District Classic at the Ned Harkness Track & Field. The Great Danes compiled 176 points, just four better than RPI's 172. Union College was third with 120 points.
Two of Rensselaer's victories came in running events and two in throws.
Katie Lynch won the discus with a throw of 37.63 meters, .18 in front of Albany's Abigale Rhodes. Lynch also finished third in the javelin (26.25), which was won by teammate
Grace Garman, who reached 30.32 meters.Â
On the track,
Leigh McCaffrey finished the 10000 meters in 44:32.47 and
Emma McGuinn was victorious in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 14.38. McGuinn was .36 in front of Katelyn Del Gandio of the Great Danes (14.74) after qualifying in a time of 14.71.
Christine Mallette had a runner-up finish in the 200 meters (25.66), though she was first among those attached, and
Katie Manning was second in the long jump (5.19). Manning also competed in the 200 dash, placing fourth (26.67).
The 4x100 team was second in 53.45. The unit included
Faydia Thompson,
Caitlin Smith,
Summer Looney, and
Katie Unger.
Rensselaer's other third place finishers included
Grace Turner in the 1500 unseeded,
Siri Walsh in the pole vault,
Julia Hubbard in the triple jump, and
Yasmine Elmady in the discus and the hammer.
