ITHACA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team captured their second straight Liberty League championship on Sunday afternoon, as they defeated the Hobart Statemen by a 5-3 final score at the Reiss Tennis Center at Cornell University. The win gives RPI their third championship in six years.
RPI took control of the match right off the bat in doubles play, sweeping all three matchups to take an early 3-0 lead.
Abraham Yohannes – named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player – paired with
Igor Visnevskij for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles to open the scoring.
Aiden Drover-Mattinen and
Andy Zhu were victorious at No. 1 doubles, winning a tight 8-6 matchup before
Bryce Burnham and
Max Safanov won at No. 3 doubles 8-5 to send the Engineers to singles play.
Zhu rode the momentum to a win at No. 2 singles by a 6-2, 6-0 final score to get the Engineers a point within the championship. Hobart made up some ground in the bottom three singles matches to make the score 4-3. However, after a 7-5 first set win by Drover-Mattinen at No. 1 singles, he brought home the clinching point with a 6-3 win to secure the match.
The Engineers now await their selection to the NCAA Tournament, which will be announced at 12 p.m. Monday afternoon.
