PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team dropped a non-league matchup on the road to the Plattsburgh State Cardinals on Friday afternoon by a final score of 13-3. RPI moves to 13-8-1 overall on the season, while Plattsburgh improves to 5-13 overall.
Plattsburgh came out of the gate strong, scoring seven runs over the first four innings to take a 7-0 lead. Only two of the Cardinals' runs came off hits, with both an RBI single and double coming in the first inning.
RPI got on the board in the sixth inning as
Jack Moncur put a ball in play that looked to be a double play up the middle. However, the throw from second to first got away, putting Moncur at second and scoring
Martin Marintchev to make it 7-1. However, Plattsburgh responded with another pair of runs in the sixth to go up 9-1.
Robbie Reddington pushed across the second RPI run in the top of the seventh inning, as a double to right scored
Cole Paquin to make it 9-2 before Plattsburgh once again responded with runs in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 13-2.
Moncur once again came through, this time with an RBI single to score Marintchev in the top of the eighth. That made the score 13-3, as the scoring came to a halt as Plattsburgh ended a threat by the Engineers in the top of the ninth with a double play to end the ballgame.
Alex Kornblau led the Cardinals with a pair of hits, adding three runs scored and two RBI's. He was one of four Cardinals with two RBI's, while Kyle Cremin led the way with three RBI. Chris Santic pitched seven innings for Plattsburgh, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out six along the way.
Leading the Engineer offense was two hits from Reddington with his RBI and double. Martinchev and
Joey Saia also added doubles, as eight of nine starters in the lineup for RPI finished with at least one hit.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 8 at 12 p.m. when they play a nine-inning and seven-inning doubleheader with SUNY Purchase in Troy.
