Box Score 2 TROY, N.Y. - Senior
Martin Marintchev went 3 for 5 with three runs and eight runs batted in, including a go-ahead grand slam and a three-run double, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 12-4 victory over Purchase College in the first game of a non-league doubleheader. RPI then took the win in the second game of the doubleheader, topping Purchase 6-2 in seven innings. The wins move RPI to 15-9-1 on the season, while Purchase falls to 9-11 overall.
Game 1
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Jake Contois pulled the home team to within one after he tripled and scored on an error. The next two batters reached on singles to load the bases for Marintchev, who drilled a line drive over the fence in left field. The first baseman added three more runs knocked in the next frame with bases loaded double down the left field line for an 11-4 lead. Martinchev, who had a run-scoring double in the first inning, scored on a single by
Julian Scarpa.
Also collecting multiple hits for the Engineers was leadoff hitter
Phillip Li. who went 2 for 4 with three runs and an RBI,
Matt Chotiner, who was 2 for 5, and Contois, who was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs.
Sam Stone, who came on in relief of
Thomas Neuman in the seventh inning, earned the win with two innings of work. He did not allow any hits after Neuman gave up just seven.
Cameron Heuer pitched the ninth.
For the Panthers, starter Myles Scarry took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings. Liam Daly paced the offense with two hits and a run in four at bats. Cameron Cruz hit a solo home run in the third inning that brought Purchase to within 3-1. It went ahead with three runs on four hits in the sixth inning.
Game 2
Five of RPI's six runs on the game came in the bottom of the second inning. After Scarpa reached base on a walk and made his way to third on a pair of wild pitches,
Jack Moncur knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Engineers up 1-0.
That score began a snowball, as the Engineers loaded the bases and had four more runs cross the plate. Highlighting the inning was a big RBI double from
Aidan Hicks that scored both
Robbie Reddington and
Parker Gelfuso to make it 5-0 in favor of RPI.
Joe Salerno knocked in both of Purchase's runs in the ballgame, hitting an RBI double down the line in the top fo the third inning to make it 5-1 before collected an RBI single in the top of the fifth to make the score 6-2. Scarpa added an RBI single in between both Purchase runs in the bottom of the fourth, a blooped ball that fell in down the right field line with the bases loaded scored just the one run.
Ben Koomey went six strong innings for the Engineers, scattering eight hits and just one earned run while striking out seven along the way.
Andrew Gaughan pitched the seventh inning, giving up just one hit and collecting a strikeout to shut the door on the day. Offensively, the trio of Reddington, Scarpa, and Li each had two hits apiece.
The Panthers were led by a three-hit effort from Salerno, while Liam Daly and Tyler Della each had two hits apiece.
The Engineers return to action on Tuesday, April 11 at 4 p.m. when they play host to Utica at Robison Field.
