ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team scored 11 times in the opening 15 minutes of the game en route to a 23-3 victory over Bard College Saturday afternoon. The 23 goals are the most scored in a game since April 30, 1994 when RPI defeated Clarkson 25-1 to conclude their season.
With the win, RPI improves to 8-2 overall and 3-2 in league play on the season, while Bard falls to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in Liberty League play.
The Engineers came out strong out of the gate, as
Megan Shay tallied the first goal just 20 seconds into the game. That began a run of 10 goals over the first seven minutes of the game as RPI opened a double-digit lead.
Bard got on the board at the 3:51 mark, as Lily Clough scored on the free position before
Lauren DeLeo answered back to give RPI an 11-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes. The Engineers then outscored Bard 6-1 in the second quarter as they brought a 17-2 lead into halftime.
RPI outscored Bard 6-1 in the second half as well, as the Engineers held strong for the victory.
Molly McDonald opened the second half with a free position score, and
Sofia Cedrone book ended the day with a goal with 3:39 remaining in the game for her first collegiate goal.
Gabbie Valle led RPI with four goals on the afternoon, while
Ella Graff and
Cara Nalbandian added four points apiece with two goals and two assists each.
Quinn Wollard and
Rylie Maready each chipped in with three points apiece, with Maready adding six draw controls.
Sarah Child collected two goals for Bard to go along with Clough's tally. Maggy Peyton added four draw controls.
The Engineers return to action this Wednesday, April 12 when they return to Troy to take on Skidmore under the lights at 7:30 p.m. in league play.
