TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team had a five-match win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, as they were edged out by No. 29 Skidmore by a 5-4 final score at Tri-City Fitness.
RPI, No. 35 in the latest national rankings, took an early advantage in doubles play, as both No. 1 and No. 2 spots came out victorious.
Nikki Ridenour and
Lorna Flores Gonzalez took an 8-3 victory at the No. 1 spot, while
Alex Mednikova and
Rani Jones won by the same result at the No. 2 spot.
Leading 2-1 heading into singles, Mednikova moved the Engineers to a 3-1 lead after a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles. Skidmore came back to tie the match with wins at No. 6 and No. 4 singles before Ridenour gave RPI the edge back at 4-3 with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
However, the Engineers fell short with losses at No. 5 and No. 3 singles, as the Throughbreads came out with the come-from-behind win.
The Engineers return to action this Wednesday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m. when they hit Sharp Courts to take on Union in Liberty League action.
