UTICA, N.Y. - Yathin Vemula won the men's high jump,
Emma McGuinn captured the women's 100 Hurdles, and Donovan Myrick was second in the men's 200 meters to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's track & field teams at the Utica University CNY Fast Chance Meet. All three of RPI's top finishers are freshmen.
After eclipsing 1.86 meters and 1.91 meters on his second attempts at both heights, Vemula topped 1.96 meters, also on his second attempt, to defeat nine others. He was unsuccessful on three attempts at 2.05 meters - the only competitor to try that height.
McGuinn was the only one of five competitors in the hurdles to get under 15 seconds. Her time of 14.38 was .96 ahead of the second place finisher.
In the men's 200, Myrick was across the line in 21.96 to narrowly miss a victory (21.59). Teammate Josh Ihegihu was sixth in the 24-runner event while also earning a third place finish in the 20-person 100 meters (11.16).Â
RPI had a third place finisher in the women's 200 with
Christine Mallette recording a time of 25.60 and a fifth in the 400 Hurdles with Cortez Garrett finishing in a time of 56.04.
The meet, which included unattached athletes, was non team scoring.
