Men’s Soccer Tops Keene State 3-1 for First Win

Engineers Score Three in Victory Over Owls

KEENE, N.H. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team collected their first win of the season on Tuesday evening, as they defeated the Keene State Owls by a final score of 3-1. Both captains Josh Gaudiano and Gabe Terrando each scored, with Brady Van Epps adding a penalty kick to clinch the win late in the 84th minute.

Both sides traded solid scoring chances through the first part of the first half, leading into the 26th minute. A foul led to a free kick for the Engineers, as Reggie Durden took a shot in the high left part of the net that was saved. However, Terando got a shot on the ball and found the lower left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

Things stayed 1-0 in favor of the Engineers until the 61st minute when Durden got in on the action again – this time with an assist. He fed Gaudiano who finished a ball into the low left corner as well, as it gave the Engineers their first two-goal lead of the season.

Minutes later in the 67th minute, Keene State got on the board courtesy of Rahul Drukpa as he found the top right corner of the net to cut the RPI back to 2-1. Mbambi Mbungu was in on the play with a helper.

However, the icing for the Engineers came in the 84th minute, as a penalty inside the box gave RPI a penalty shot that Van Epps converted, pushing the lead almost out of reach at 3-1.

Kyle Osborne collected three shots, while Terrando and Sam Shmukler each had two shots on goal apiece. Collin Such collected five saves apiece. For Keene State, Mbungu led the way with a team-high six shots with two on net. Goaltender Regan Racicot made six saves on nine shots on frame.

The Engineers return to action this Saturday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. when they return home to Troy to take on Oswego State at ECAV Stadium.
