CASTLETON, Vt. – Three second half goals sparked the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team as they defeated the Vermont State Castleton Spartans by a 3-1 final on the road.
The Spartans broke the ice and put the first goal on the board in the 10
th minute, as Emma Patrissi scored her second goal of the season on a feed from Lauren Fotter to give Castleton the 1-0 lead.
RPI put on the pressure in the first half to no avail, as the Spartans maintained the lead into the half. The Engineers broke through with a game-tying goal in the ninth minute of the second half, as
Gwen Barnes collected her third goal of the season on an assist from
Sarah Sedlacek to push even things up at 1-1.
Five minutes later in the 59
th minute,
Bryanna Swinson connected for her first goal of the season to push the Engineers ahead 2-1. She scored on an assist from
Veronica Martinez de Pinillos. As time wound down, RPI got their cushion from Barnes as she scored her second goal of the game to push the Engineers lead to 3-1.
RPI finished the game outshooting the Spartans 23-12, with an 11-5 advantage with shots on net. Barnes led the way with five total shots, while Swinson added four. Alexis Billings added three shots for Castleton.
The Engineers return to action this Saturday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. when they play host to Drew University at ECAV Stadium.
